Guam
Introduction
Guam is an island in the Western Pacific Ocean. The largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands, Guam is an unincorporated US territory. Guam is a popular destination for divers, although its diving sites are far less interesting than those of Micronesia and Palau; still accessing those islands usually require a stop-over in Guam. The economy of Guam mostly rely on US troops and Japanese tourists.

Diving Sites
-
Blue Hole
rating : 2.0
level : only for advanced divers!
depth : 40 m
visibility : very good
description :
Divers jump in the water directly on the top of this Blue Hole, thus quickly reaching the top entrance at a depth of about 12 meters. This hole has a diameter of 5 meters, and goes down to around 40 meters, opening on a gentle sandy slope. There is only limited light in the chimney, and diving torches are strongly recommended. Apart of some sponges, there is no life in this hole. After reaching the bottom of the hole, divers quickly ascend to an area with small reefs where interesting fish can be seen - including a stone-fish and a crab. This diving site is attractive only if few divers are there at the same time.

Tokai Maru - SMS Cormoran
rating : 2.0
type of diving : wreck
level : for advanced divers
depth : 40 m
visibility : 5 m
description :
In the harbor of Apra - the natural harbor of Guam still used today by the US Marines - two wrecks touching each other are forming an interesting dive site. The SMS Cormoran was build in China in 1909 for the Russians, before being seized by Germans in 1914; the ship sunk itself the 17th of April 1917, the day the USA entered the war. Since the ship is completely empty, there is only limited interest for divers. However, the Tokai Maru, a Japanese frigate sunk in August 1943 by a US submarine, is much more attractive. The inside of the wreck can be visited, but is also empty. Because of its large size, with a length of 170 meters, a large part of the dive takes place inside the wreck. A turtle is supposed to live there, but we did not see it.
